Doxycycline price for dogs

Last updated 14 September 2023

On 14 March 2023, the UK Medicines regulator approved a new heartbeat patent for Doxycycline Monohydrate (in the brand name of Doxy, others: Moxydin, Trimix, and others). This marks the latest twist in a divided line between generic and branded treatment options, allowing the generic version of Doxy to be dispensed in an alternative drug format.

Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic that has been used for hundreds of years to treat bacterial infections and some forms of acne. It was first approved for treatment of Lyme disease in England in 1952, but was withdrawn in 1956 following the suspected link between alcohol and the development of acne. Doxy has been replaced by other antibiotics, including amoxicillin, ampicillin, cephalexin, penicillin, and erythromycin. Although there have been no confirmed cases of rosacea in the past five years, rosacea has been reported in a small number of people and is generally considered a side-effect of Doxy's use.

However, the new patent for Doxy shows that it can also be prescribed to treat rosacea in adults who have no evidence of rosacea symptoms. This opens the floodgates for rosacea treatment, with treatment being taken only for rosacea.

The UK patent on Doxy covers the active ingredient, amoxicillin, as well as other uses. This means that Doxy can be prescribed to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, from respiratory tract infections to skin infections, sinusitis, and urinary tract infections.

This patent is being challenged by a number of different manufacturers, including GSK, SmithKline Beecham and others. The challenge was strong given that many of the patents covering Doxy are invalid because they were not issued in anticipation of future treatments, such as those for acne or Lyme disease. GSK's patent on Doxy covers the active ingredient amoxicillin, while SmithKline Beecham's patent on Doxy covers amoxicillin, and GSK's patent on Doxy's brand name, doxycycline.

The manufacturers say that while Doxycycline is still under patent, the patent on amoxicillin has expired and will soon be replaced by a new generic version. GSK and SmithKline Beecham claim that this will reduce the price of Doxy in the UK and could potentially reduce the cost of manufacturing Doxy in the US.

However, the manufacturers say that although Doxy is a generic medication, there is no evidence to suggest that it will cause the same side-effect as amoxicillin, such as rosacea.

A similar challenge was also heard in 2007 by the UK Pharmacopoeia in an ongoing battle with a potential new generic alternative for amoxicillin. The battle was fought by some manufacturers, who argued that Doxy's ability to penetrate deep into the skin caused rosacea, a side-effect of its use in adult acne sufferers.

A spokesperson for GSK confirmed that the patent on Doxy is still in force and said that it was working to find another alternative to amoxicillin, which could be available in the UK in a generic form.

However, another pharmacy in the UK that was making Doxy without a patent and selling the drug without any, had to go through an extensive trial to prove their point. At the time, the trial was done, but GSK was still working to find a cheaper alternative to the branded product. GSK's spokesperson added that they were still fighting the issue, noting that the patent on Doxy will be renewed.

GSK's patent on Doxy covers the active ingredient amoxicillin, while SmithKline Beecham's patent on Doxy's brand name, doxycycline, covers the use of amoxicillin in adults, as well as other uses.

In the new patent application, the manufacturers claim that Doxy is an alternative to branded amoxicillin, which is currently only available as the brand name Doxy. However, GSK's spokesperson said that in any case, they will be fighting for a patent on amoxicillin, which is already out of their control and could potentially be replaced by a generic alternative.

GSK and SmithKline Beecham claim that while Doxy is an alternative to branded amoxicillin, it could also provide other antibiotics, such as azithromycin or flucloxacillin.
